Do you really need a logo as a florist?

Updated: Oct 29, 2024

Short answer … You don't "need" a logo as a florist but having one can help you sell online. Give me 5 min to show you if you should consider getting a logo to sell flowers online or not.

Branding is something that many small business owners struggle to understand. Yes branding includes your logo, the fonts you're using on your website and social media posts, it's the little icons in your Instagram Story Highlights but the reality is that branding is so much more than that. In simple words, your brand Identity is what differentiates with you from your competitors, the local florists in your city. It's what makes you unique.

If you think that your logo must be the number 1 aspect that will make you stand out then go get one. Start searching for a graphic designer and hire them to design your logo and if you want to unleash your creativity then watch my tutorial on how to create a flower business logo on CANVA.

You may be thinking "wow, that was a quick and straight forward approach" Friend, it's because it's that easy. If you put so much value on your logo then no matter how long or deep this post will be, you'll still end up getting one. We tend to do researches on Google with many assumptions and most of the time, what we're really doing is seeking reassurance.

And to those who are truly seeking guidance on this topic: keep reading, let's debunk or a myth or two together!

Table of contents

1/Using a logo or a picture of yourself on social media: the debate

This one's going to get extremely interesting. People buy from people. Please read that phrase again. I am a Marketer selling services and digital products online and believe me: people buy from people. Selling anything requires trust. Trust comes from knowing who's behind the page, who's the person you're buying from, do they look nice and kind, etc

It's harder to sell with just your logo. Make a list of your favorite florist influencers, educators, coaches. Check out their pages. Do they share photos and videos of themselves? What do you see in their profile pictures?

Chances are it's a picture of them. Not a logo. And you may be saying "oh it's because they're already famous" No, it has nothing to do with popularity. It's marketing. That's how they chose to market themselves. They all have professional logos but they don't necessarily feel the need to be represented by those pixels.

So yeah, here's my honest thought on this dilemma: they're building their personal brand that way and you could definitely do the same to succeed. Get inspiration from real people in your industry. Do not copy big brands like Adidas, Starbucks, Shein, McDonalds.

2/"A logo will make me look more professional"

Exact. Your customers will take you more seriously. You can use your logo on all your marketing materials: website, social media, packaging, flower truck, flyers, banners, etc.

A logo is absolutely needed in this case. And if you're detail-oriented like me then definitely hire someone to create one for you. There are many affordable graphic design services on platforms like Fiverr if you have a small budget. Oh and did I tell you that you can also watch my tutorial on how to create your logo on CANVA? I probably did …. but hey … repetition is important.

3/Can you launch your website without a logo?

To launch your flower website you need colors and fonts preferably from a logo but it's not always mandatory. That's how I'm building my Site Templates. I'm choosing the branding aspects first, I build the site and the last step is designing a logo aligned with the theme. There's no rule on what should come first, at least from my perspective. Other Web Designers may disagree but it's okay.

So my final advice would be: do what feels right for you. Both services can easily get expensive. You can get your logo today and buy one of my Site Templates next month or hire me for a Custom Web Design project. We can still proceed if you're hesitant about the logo. I'll adapt to your needs.

4/The most common types of floral logos I've seen online

The first one is the typical rose/leaf/petals combo. I think 85% of the florists in my audience use at least one of those elements. And for a sophisticated and elegant style, opt for initials: 2 letters from your brand name and voilà !

Feel free to use and experiment with all the colors of the rainbow. Try different palettes and see which one you like the most. Read this article on how to choose your brand colors for further guidance.

I've also noticed a trend in florists just using their business names with stylish fonts. It may appear plain for some people but sometimes less is more.

Now you’re ready for the next step of launching your flower business which is: your website!

But, are you at a stage where you need a website? Not all florists use a website. Many floral designers prefer promoting on social media. Either way, take your time to compare different platforms before building your site, learn about the best website builder for a florist first.
