What are the perks of being a florist?
4 Reasons to consider a career in floristry
When people think about becoming a florist, they often focus on the flowers themselves. But for me, one of the most interesting things about floristry is that it combines creativity, human connection and entrepreneurship in a way that few careers do.
As a digital marketer who works with aspiring florists, I see floristry as more than simply arranging beautiful flowers. Here are four perks that make it an interesting career path.
1. You get to be creative and follow your passion
One of the biggest perks of being a florist is the creative freedom. Every arrangement can be different. You can experiment with colors, textures, flower combinations, shapes, seasonal varieties and different design styles. Endless possibilities to be honest. Each bouquet will be somehow unique.
Whether you're creating a romantic wedding bouquet or a modern centerpiece, you get to turn an idea into something people can actually see and touch. For me, that's particularly appealing because floristry allows you to build a business around something you genuinely enjoy.
And you don't necessarily have to choose between creativity and making a living. With the right business strategy, your passion for flowers can become a service that people are willing to pay for.
2. You're part of meaningful moments in people's lives
There's also a very human side to floristry that I think is easy to overlook. Flowers rarely come without an emotion attached to them. Someone might order flowers to celebrate a birthday, congratulate a friend, thank someone, remember a loved one, apologize, express affection or it could be as big as celebrating a wedding. Isn't that so cool ?
That means you're not simply selling flowers. You're helping someone communicate something that they may struggle to put into words. A bouquet can become part of someone's memory of a wedding. Flowers can represent an act of love or appreciation. They can also provide comfort during difficult moments.
I think that's one of the most rewarding aspects of the profession: your work can become part of someone's story.
3. You don't necessarily need a Master's degree to get started
Another advantage is the relatively accessible entry point.
You don't necessarily need a university degree or master's degree to start learning floristry. You can begin with a genuine interest in flowers, learn the basics, practice your arrangements, and develop your skills over time. You could even start as a hobby.
Make arrangements for yourself, friends, birthdays, or small events. Photograph your work and gradually build a portfolio. As your skills and confidence grow, you can start accepting paid orders.
This also means you don't have to build a full-scale business from day one. You can start small, learn what customers actually want and expand when you're ready. Yeah, sounds perfect right?
4. You can build a profitable specialty
Finally, floristry can become a serious business if you approach it with good business sense.
You don't necessarily have to compete by selling standard bouquets to everyone. Specializing can help you differentiate yourself and potentially charge more for your expertise.
For example, you could specialize in wedding floristry, luxury arrangements, corporate flowers, funeral and remembrance flowers or floral services designed specifically for a particular industry.
The key is understanding your numbers. Beautiful flowers don't automatically create a profitable business. You need to account for your materials, labor, delivery and price your services with a healthy margin.
I'd also encourage every aspiring florist to develop some basic business common sense: understand your customers, track your expenses, know what is actually profitable and don't be afraid to charge appropriately for your work. Know your worth and add taxes as we say,
For me, that's what makes floristry so interesting. You can combine creativity, meaningful human connections, and entrepreneurship in one career. You can start small, follow your passion, find your specialty and gradually turn your skills into a business.
