Dear flower friend, congratulations because you’ve stumbled upon the perfect article on how to create your flower website or landing page.
How? Well because I’m a Web Designer building websites for people in the floral industry and I also teach florists how to successfully launch their online flower shop!
Okay let’s start with the essentials steps you need to follow to create your flower site. And guess what? You don’t need to code anything to start a website nowadays.
Table of contents
1)Choose your site builder
I assume you’re a DIY person who loves challenges so here are my best tips to choose the right site builder. But “what’s a site builder anyway?”
A site builder is a platform you can use to build your website on. The best platforms you can rely on as a florist are:
WIX
Squarespace
Wordpress
Shopify
There are many website builders out there but florists tend to choose one of those. Why?
Simply because they’re easy to use, the user interfaces are extremely intuitive and you can easily find tutorials on Youtube if you’re stuck.
Now, how to choose the right builder? It’s actually pretty easy to determine.
-Try each one of them
-Use the platform for a week and see if you like it or not
The good news is that I’m building flower websites on WIX and you can read this article to know if you should choose WIX or not. It’ll save you time.
2)Get familiar with the platforms for at least 2 weeks
2 weeks is not mandatory but you need to give it time. Make sure you spend enough time on the platform before paying for a yearly or monthly subscription.
WIX | You choose the length of your free trial, choose between 7, 14 or 30 days |
Squarespace | 14 days free trial |
Wordpress | 14 days free trial |
Shopify | 3 days free trial |
If you’re extremely busy and can only work on your site during weekends then go for the longest period available. Try all the features before subscribing.
My suggestions:
-create your blank pages
-add a gallery
-add a blog and write an article
-add a menu and customise it (change colors, fonts)
-build a page with this layout: 1 big title, 3 paragraphs, 1 button, 2 images
-add social media buttons
After following the steps above, rate how hard it was for you to complete the tasks.
Note how long it took from start to finish (1 hour, 3 hours, 1 day, etc) and rate the difficulty (easy, somehow difficult, too complicated, etc)
Repeat the same steps with the other platforms. You’ll spend 2 months comparing them but I promise it will be worth it. There’s no perfect builder for your flower business. Be wise in your decision making process.
Most of the time, small business owners choose based on the interface and the cost.
3)Find inspiration online before starting
I have a Pinterest board full of Flower Website Inspiration to help you with that. You just have to browse the Pins and then unleash your creativity. Use your computer for a better experience.
I made sure to add florist sites with different color palettes. Remember that the goal is to get ideas for your website, don’t copy paste what someone else’s created.
4)Build your website
Before doing anything I want you to write down the number of pages and their names.
Next, write your content. Make sure you add enough text for SEO. It’ll help you rank higher on Google.
Third step, prepare your pictures and upload them. Rename them well, use keywords.
Think of the layout, visualise it, take a pen and a piece of paper and start drawing. You don’t need to learn to use mockups at all. Some Web Designers still use them and that’s great for them. I personally skip that process.
Add the elements on the page and start playing with the platform. Yes the verb “play” makes sense to me because that’s how I view it. Play with colors and fonts. Increase or decrease the size of the text. Add, remove and replace images, etc.
5)Watch online tutorials to speed up the process
After selecting the winner and trying it for a while, it’s time to watch tutorials. You’ll struggle to design your site without help unless you’ve built a site before. The 1st attempt is the hardest.
Focus on 1 or 2 Youtube channels and execute fast.
e.g. If you want to add a blog and write an article on Squarespace then implement as soon you finish watching the video. Don’t watch 3 other videos explaining how to achieve the same thing.
6)Seek help if you’ve spent months on your website
We all need help and guidance. Get in touch with the support first. Chat or email them and wait till they reach back. You can also read the articles from the Help Centre or forums.
Building your website will become a burden if you feel stuck for too long. Don’t waste your energy trying to do it by yourself. You can also go on websites like Fiverr or Upwork to seek professional help at affordable prices.
Check out my latest releases to see if WIX could be the right platform for your flower business.
